Train & Compete

AVIC provides full range Track and Field programming and competition opportunities for all ages and abilities, including sprints, middle distance and hurdles, wheelchair racing, jumps, pole vault, and throws.

Athletes from all disciplines and groups have the option to compete at five Track and Field meets held on Vancouver Island between April and June, including the Dogwood Track and Field Meet, hosted by AVIC at UVIC’s Centennial Stadium. Athletes are also encouraged to participate in the BC Club Provincial Championships in July. Some of our older training groups (ages 16+) also travel to Invitational competitions throughout Canada, or in the U.S.

AVIC is proud to have athletes who have qualified to compete at provincial, national and international Track and Field competitions, including the BC Summer Games, Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships, National Track and Field Championships, Pan Am Games, the Commonwealth Games, the World Athletics Championships and even the Olympics.

  • Our Junior Development program takes place annually in the spring between April and July. Programming occurs twice a week (Tues/Thurs) from 6:15 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. (90 minutes). A session includes a warm up with dynamic drills, after which athletes divide into 3-4 groups (5-10 participants of same/close age) who rotate through a throwing discipline (javelin, discus, shot put), a jumping discipline (high jump, long jump, triple jump) and a hurdles and/or running workout.

Disciplines vary each session on a rotating schedule allowing athletes to experience and hone in on specific skills for each event as part of their long-term development.
